Heidi also offered up her best hair tips
FORGETTING keeping up with the Joneses — Spencer Pratt is just trying to follow in his wife Heidi Montag’s fit footsteps.
After Heidi got a head start on her sculpted summer body and lost 22 pounds, Spencer told The U.S. Sun it was his turn to turn heads at the beach.
MAKING THE HYDROXYCUT
Heidi, former star of the MTV show The Hills, started her transformation when she became the face of the supplement brand Hydroxycut.
And Spencer decided to turn her fruitful results into a family affair.
“My goal is a six-pack, which means I’m going to be pretty fit,” Spencer told The U.S. Sun.
“I feel like with [Hydroxycut] and how hard she trained and her diet, I watched that extra energy boost she was getting,” he added.
“I drink a lot of coffee and it was not giving me the boost she was getting.
“I was like, this is obviously not just caffeine, and whatever they got in these formulas gives her more energy than me drinking six espressos.”
LEANER FOR LONGER
While Heidi famously underwent ten surgeries in one day back in 2010 at just 23 years old, the now 37-year-old didn’t need to go under the knife to get her beach body.
Spencer knew his wife was winning at looking — and feeling — her best, and he just wanted to catch up.
“She’s able to work out and be a mom, and I said, ‘I need to follow Heidi’s lead and get on this program,'” he said.
The former reality star is now the newest face of Hydroxycut himself.
And this time, he’s doing things his way.
“I’m doing a more hardcore version of what Heidi was on with the original, so I’m even more jacked up now,” he said.
“I may actually gain weight in the sense of muscle weight, so I’m not getting on the scale,” he added.
“That’s why l like working with a product versus the drugs people use to lose weight.”
When it comes to getting a leaner frame, Spencer is it in for the long haul.
“This is something I can maintain once I get in shape,” he said.
“I have friends who I know have done weight loss drugs and it doesn’t work because they still are hungry,” he added.
“I would rather do something that’s got vitamins in it and is healthier than something pharmaceutical.”
And Heidi was on the same page as her husband when it came to shedding the pounds.
“It’s more long-term — sometimes the weight isn’t equivalent to what you want to look like,” she said.
“For me, I had excess weight, but I also gained the muscles, so it just depends on each person.”
Spencer referred to his wife’s arms as “tanks.”
A FAMILY FITNESS AFFAIR
The couple, who also told The U.S. Sun that they share a skincare routine, feel that the best thing about getting on a healthy journey is that they can do it together.
“It gave me that energy I needed to get through the day — it enables me to be able to do more and be able to get those workouts in and make healthier choices with my food,” she said.
“It’s always good to do that as a family,” she added.
Spencer shared how their eldest son Gunner is even getting in on the fitness fun.
“He wants to get in the gym with us, so it’s just a great thing to demonstrate for children as well,” he said.
During her 12-week weight loss journey, Heidi used the Hydroxcut Original formula, which is composed of vitamins B and D, as well as apple cider vinegar.
For his own fitness plan, Spencer is more of a fan of the brand’s Hardcore version, that is geared towards those looking for “extra focus,” and more “intensity.”
WORKOUTS WHEREVER, WHEREVER
The pair, who say that their lives have become busier since becoming parents, have learned to exercise whenever — and wherever — they can.
Heidi, who explained that she is constantly lugging strollers and bags, tries to find inventive ways to get her workouts in.
“I feel like being a mom on the go is a lot of work, so I try to incorporate squats in there, push-ups, whatever I can do,” she said.
Spencer even brings kettlebells to his eldest son’s soccer practice.
“I was doing lunges around the field, or air squats. I had little weights I was carrying,” he said.
“You can also go on hikes and it doesn’t feel like a workout,” he added.
“We do a lot of walking.”
While they also have a home gym, it’s too tight for them to both be working on their summer bodies together.
“It’s not like a JLo gym, it’s a garage,” Spencer joked.
“The car also goes in there so you have to take the weights out,” Heidi chimed in.
LOSE WEIGHT, GAIN CONFIDENCE
Heidi said that she doesn’t think that there is any one size fits all program for getting snatched in time for summer.
“I lost 22 pounds and I felt really good at that weight and with the working out, and that was a really healthy amount for me,” she added.
“I wouldn’t recommend a certain amount for anyone. It definitely is a catalyst and helps you to get to that goal.”
SAFER STRANDS
To maintain her signature blonde locks, Heidi also shared how she keeps her strands safe from damage.
“My biggest hair tip is to just not use too much heat on your hair,” she said.
“Not curling it too much, not using it too much, so that’s what I try to do,” she added.
“I get a blow out once a week, maybe twice, but other than that, I just leave it.”
