AN INTERIOR pro has claimed that people need to stop painting their ceilings white.
It’s a mistake that we’re all making, but according to Interior Advisor Claire, who also calls herself an ‘Interior Queen’ doing so is making your rooms feel much smaller.
Not only this, but according to the ‘Self Build Pro’, if you wallpaper or paint your ceiling a different colour to your walls, it can really elevate a space.
So if you want your guests to be impressed by your home, you’ll need to listen up.
Sharing her advice on social media, the interior lover posted her clip with the caption ‘Learn what we mean by the fifth wall of our home and how we can decorate it to create dream interiors with that WOW factor!’
She then advised viewers: “Don’t decorate your ceiling white!”
Following this, Claire said: “Do you think that white ceilings have had their moment?
“They’re actually known as the fifth wall and we can decorate them in the same way that we can decorate our walls.
“I’m gonna share some examples of this done really well in a moment – if you’re not brave enough for those, I’ll give a toned down example of how you can elevate your space.”
Claire then posted a variety of pictures, whereby people had decorated their ceilings, as she added: “This is an example of a client’s house that I have done recently. They have painted their ceiling an accent colour and kept the walls a pale neutral. I can’t tell you how good it looks.
“Here’s another example – they have wallpapered the ceiling. They’ve been extra clever here because the room is narrow and they’ve used stripes going left to right to draw the room out so it appears wider.”
Following this, Claire advised: “If you don’t feel brave enough to go for wallpaper or a different colour on your ceiling, another trick I always recommend and what I’m going to be doing in my own self build is carrying the pale neutral from your walls up onto your ceiling as well.
“The reason that we do this is twofold – one, so that there’s less cutting in so you’re saving yourself time but also, if you’ve got quite low ceilings, carrying that same colour up, tricks the eye into thinking that your ceiling heights are higher.”
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @thatcotswoldclaire, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed a whopping 102,000 views.
Social media users were grateful for Claire’s advice and many took to the comments to express this.
One person said: “Absolutely love these. I’ve wanted to paint my ceilings for years but never knew what to do.”
Another added: “I was thinking about this.”
A third commented: “LOVE this. Great ideas.”
Whilst someone else beamed: “A pause for thought!! I’ll be keeping this in mind. Thank you.”
CEILING DESIGN EXAMPLES
At the same time, other TikTok users raced to the comments to share how they have decorated their ceilings.
One user beamed: “I have painted my living room ceiling blue.”
A second explained: “I have wallpapered my ceiling in my lounge in a beautiful blue and white floral print. It looks amazing.”
Another shared: “I’ve just painted my kitchen ceiling orange, love it.”
Whilst another interior fan wrote: “My bedroom is pink, the walls and ceiling are all the same colour, like a cocoon.”
