IF you’re looking to renovate your home or spruce up your garden in time for the warmer weather, then you may just want to take note!
That’s because a declutter and home improvement expert has warned of the six things that may be making your house or outdoor haven look “cheap” or “tacky.”
Speaking exclusively to Fabulous Digital, Zlatka Dimitrova, from Fantastic Services, revealed the offending trends she urges everyone to avoid.
And it’s not good news if you’re a fan of garden gnomes…
PLASTIC DECORATIONS
If you struggle to keep your flowers alive, then chances are you’ve scattered fake ones around your house and perhaps even in your garden.
But according to Zlatka, the “excessive use of plastic decorations” such as fake flowers or even cheap garden gnomes can give your garden a “tacky appearance.”
Instead, she advises opting for “natural materials and tasteful decor items” to create a more “elegant outdoor space.”
NEGLECTED LAWN/PLANTS
The property whizz points out that neglected, overgrown, or unkempt plants can make a garden look “abandoned and messy.”
She advises that regular pruning, weeding, and general maintenance are essential for a tidy appearance.
OVERCROWDING
Have you ever stumbled upon a purchase you know you don’t need but it’s too good OF a bargain to turn down?
Well, according to Zlatka, it’s really worth thinking twice before making that purchase – especially if you know you don’t have any room at home to put it.
“Your garden or home can look cheap if your home is crowded with too many knick-knacks, furniture pieces, or decorations,” she warns.
“This can make a space feel cramped and disorganised, giving it a cheap and chaotic look.”
FURNITURE
With the unpredictable British weather, chances are your outdoor furniture has endured years of rain, hail stones and wind.
However, the property whizz warns that furniture that’s “visibly damaged, stained, or outdated can detract from the overall aesthetic of a home.”
She goes on to say that it’s better to invest in durable, weather-resistant furniture that can enhance the look and functionality of your garden.
“Low-quality or damaged garden furniture can detract from the overall appeal of your outdoor space, so better invest in durable, weather-resistant furniture that can enhance the look and functionality of your garden,” Zlatka concludes.
HARSH LIGHTING
The property expert also notes how inadequate or harsh lighting can make a space feel “dingy and unwelcoming.”
Instead, she says: “Proper lighting, including ambient, task, and accent lighting, can enhance the ambience and make a home feel more inviting and upscale.”
BLINDS AND CURTAINS
And last but not least, Zlatka points out that low-quality blinds, plastic curtains, or improperly fitted window treatments can make a room “look unfinished.”
She advises: “Opt for well-made, properly-sized curtains or shades to enhance the look of your windows.”
The property guru also goes on to say how a lack of cohesive style or theme can make a space feel “disjointed.”
Sharing her top tip, Zlatka says: “Choosing a consistent colour palette and style can help create a more polished and harmonious look.”
