Fiend targeted victim in the 1970s causing her ‘profound and long-lasting consequences’
GARY Glitter has been ordered to pay one of his victims over half a million pounds after she suffered the “worst kind of abuse”.
The woman sued the paedo popstar over the “profound and long-lasting consequences” from the five-year hell.
She was just 12 when Glitter – real name Paul Gadd – targeted her and two other children between 1975 to 1980.
Glitter, 80, must now pay the victim £508,800 following a ruling at the High Court.
Mrs Justice Tipples said today: “There is no doubt that the claimant was subject to sexual abuse of the most serious kind by the defendant when she was only 12 years old and that has had very significant adverse impact on the rest of her life.”
The judge explained the six-figure-sum includes £381,000 in lost earnings and £7,800 for future therapy and treatment.
A further hearing will take place next week to consider any interest on the damages and legal costs.
Richard Scorer, head of abuse law at Slater & Gordon, said: “In making this award, the court has properly acknowledged the appalling abuse suffered by my client.
“Whilst no amount of money can make up for horrific sexual abuse, the award at least goes some way to recognising the devastation inflicted on my client throughout her childhood and adult life.
“Gadd’s refusal to engage with the process merely proves his utter lack of remorse, something we will be reminding the parole board about if he makes another application for early release.
“We will be pursuing Gadd for payment and will continue to support our client through this process.”
The victim had previously secured a “default judgement” in her claim – meaning a ruling in her favour over Glitter’s liability.
The court was told the woman has been left unable to work for several decades following the campaign of abuse.
Part of her bid for damages included a claim for £20,000 per year for 40 years.
Jonathan Metzer, speaking on behalf of the woman, said the predator’s abuse had a “dramatic and terrible impact” on her education, work and personal relationships.
He told the court: “One can only begin to imagine the profound pain felt by someone who has experienced such shocking abuse… then suffered from feelings of shame and worthlessness.”
The lawyer said the woman was “plagued by thoughts of self-blame”.
Mr Metzer added: “You may have concluded that his status as a rock star created a substantial imbalance of power that he exploited.
“There was an abuse of trust… her mother was beguiled by the defendant.”
Glitter was convicted in 2015 of sexually assaulting her and two other young victims between 1975 and 1980.
Today’s order comes just weeks after Glitter failed in his bid for freedom.
The disgraced popstar was locked up again in March last year after breaching his licencing conditions.
Glitter had only been released from his 16-year sentence for abusing three schoolgirls just one month before.
The Parole Board ruled in February Glitter had lost his bid as he is still showing a “sexual interest in underage girls”.
Glitter preyed on his young victims during the height of his fame in the 1970s.
He was first jailed in 1999 after a sickening cache of child abuse images was found on his laptop.
The former rocker later hid in Cuba where he fathered a love child with Yudenia Sosa Martinez before moving to Cambodia.
But Glitter was deported for suspected child abuse in 2002 and next settled in Vietnam.
The predator was caged again in the country in 2006 for abusing two girls aged 11 and 12.
Glitter returned to the UK in 2015 after travelling between countries notorious for sex tourism.
The extent of his crimes was revealed years later when he became the first person to be arrested under Operation Yewtree – the investigation launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
Glitter was locked up for 16 years in 2015 for historic sex attacks on three young girls but was released midway through the sentence.
He was returned to prison for breaching his licence after The Sun on Sunday revealed he was allegedly viewing videos of children.
Glitter is currently being held at HMP Risley in Warrington, Cheshire.
