The latest storyline turn follows recent heartbreak for an Albert Square couple
REISS Colwell found himself scrambling to make cash in tonight’s EastEnders episode.
The character – played by Jonny Freeman – has been trying for a baby with partner Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) for several months.
In their attempts, the couple have turned to IVF and thought they had been successful in conceiving.
However, in recently aired sad scenes, Sonia learned she hadn’t been pregnant after all.
After noticing bleeding, Sonia was quickly rushed to hospital to be checked over.
A doctor informed Sonia, Reiss and Sonia’s sister Bianca: “I’m afraid there’s no embryo. It’s called a blighted ovum where it attaches to the uterus but doesn’t develop into an embryo.”
Despite Bianca saying Sonia needs time to grieve the loss, her sister is more determined than ever to try again with IVF.
After Sonia commented they will need more money to have the best possible chance to conceive, Reiss was left panicking.
He desperately attempted make some cash, including trying to sell a car to Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick), although Jay refuses to buy the vehicle after seeing it is not working.
Later, Reiss also tries to charge Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) for a tax bill she’d already paid – but Kat soon cottons on and calls Reiss out.
Unfortunately for Reiss, Bianca became aware of his actions after speaking with Jay and Kat at the Queen Vic.
She followed him to a care home, where Reiss’ comatose wife Debbie, who suffered a stroke, is being looked after.
Reiss initially kept Debbie a secret from Sonia until she eventually learned the truth.
Last summer, EastEnders fans got a glimpse of Reiss’ dark side as he committed a shocking act.
Despite claiming to Sonia that he had been able to fund the IVF treatment thanks to a trust fund from his mother, this was far from reality.
Viewers were sickened to learn that Reiss was, in fact, stealing money from the comatose Debbie.
Meanwhile, in tonight’s episode, Bianca overheard Reiss telling Debbie: “It didn’t work, Debs. The baby, mine and Sonia’s. Well, it turns out there never was a baby.
“I’m beginning to think things just aren’t going to work out. I’m trying to stay upbeat, for Sonia. It’s harder for her, of course it is.”
He added: “I’m so grateful for the help you’ve already given me and Sonia.
“But I need to take the rest of the money now, Debs – to give us a better chance.
“And if it works and we’re lucky enough to have a baby, this will be the first place we’ll visit, I swear.”
Will Bianca tell Sonia the truth?
EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
